Therefore I Am

MYSPACE

Brittany: Where did you come up with the name for the band?
Chris: Well back when our former guitar player Brandon Davis was in the band, he and I were just sitting around on AIM trying to think of a band name. Originally we decided that we wanted it to be "Therefore I Am" something. Like Therefore I am cool or something of that nature. After a few minutes we both just decided to leave it Therefore I am and that's it. It sounded cool! So we went for it.

Brittany: How and when did the band form?
Chris: Well it was about 3 and a half almost 4 years ago when Jim, Brandon, and I's old band Dairen broke up. We just wanted to continue playing in band so it was the three of us. Jim and Brandon knew a kid names Dan Sullivan from church who played guitar. So he ended up being the other original guitar player. To get a singer we posted and add on Justanotherscene.com saying there was a band looking for a singer with some demo tracks so they could hear the tunes. Soon enough Alex got in touch with us and sent us back the demo we posted, with some vocals over it. We loved it and got so excited. So when he came to jam around with us we pretty much just told him he was in the band from the start....if he wanted to be...which he did.

Brittany: How would you describe your band to someone who has yet to hear your music?
Chris: Worst question ever...haha...I can never answer this. I don't know how to quite describe it. It's not super different, but it's not the same thing you've heard a thousand times either. I just tell people to go take a listen and then tell me what they think.

Brittany: What are some of the bands major influences?
Chris: We all come from very very different musical backgrounds and tastes but i would have to say that some of the common ground are bands like Glassjaw, Thursday, Thrice, Owen, Muse.

Brittany: Have you ever been compared to any other band?
Chris: Not that I know of. Sometimes people make generalizations and say we sound just like another band. And if it were true, I would have no problem admitting it. But usually i disagree. So I guess the answer would be yes, but usually not justifiably.

Brittany: What is your favorite song to perform live and why?
Chris: My favorite song to perform live would have to be Farewell Via Park just because of the heavier/half-time parts are a blast to play for me.

Brittany: What are some of your favorite venues to play at?
Chris: Hahaha. Well the Tsonga's arena was pretty sweet! And playing Lupo's in Providence was pretty awesome too. But honestly. I like playing the smaller shows at the VFW halls and places like that the best. You can interact with the crowd more, and that's where the real fans are.

Brittany: If you could create a tour who would you tour with?
Chris: Oh damn....is there a limit to how many bands? If not, I would kill to tour with Thursday, Thrice, Underoath, Muse, The Sleeping, The Receiving End of Sirens, Days Away....the list could go on for ever...we're talking like warped tour in the amount of bands I wish I could tour with.

Brittany: What is something you wish you could change about the music industry?
Chris: Image. Unfortunately you and your band have to have an image. Whether it be a different image or a cliche image. It's things like that that make me start wondering what music is coming to, ya know?

Brittany: What's the best advice you have been given or can give about the industry?
Chris: Have a happy medium when it comes to doing what you're told to and being independent, so to speak. You have to listen to the industry and work with it, or it will crush you and your dreams. But you also have to do things yourself and don't always take the "yes sir" road.

Brittany: Any fan experiences that stick out to you?
Chris: After we finish our set at the Taste of Chaos, we were all jacked up on adrenaline and excitment, so Brian told me to go back out on stage and give my sticks to someone. Well when I walked back on stage with my sticks about 50 kids starting screaming and reaching. Yea...it was ridiculous...ridiculously awesome.

Brittany: Do you have any hidden talents?
Chris: Hmm let's see. I can give myself the chills on command....kind of weird...don't really know why...or why I'm telling everyone...aaaand that's not really a talent....aaaaand i'm going to just going to shut up now.

Brittany: What are some things you keep with you at all times when on tour?
Chris: Phone, wallet, keys...the usual. But next time we go out, it will be my bag with my marching sticks and practice pad in it....and prob a spare shirt with some deoderant. Deoderant is basically my shower...

Brittany: What are some other bands you think we should keep our eye out for in the Boston area?
Chris: Fly Upright Kite, Astrea, A Loss for Words, Four Year Strong, Medicated Kisses, The Cadence, Lannen Fall, the list goes on and on. Go to our myspace and look under "support our friends"

Brittany: Any last words to the readers and fans?
Chris: Don't ever give up. Ever. All you need is you and your band and some good tunes. If you combine those with drive, hard work, and perseverence then you'll be golden.
