The Morning Light
Myspace Tanya: First of all thanks for taking the time out to do this interview with us Harrison! Why don't we start off by you introducing yourself and telling us a little about your musical background? Harrison : No problem! My pleasure. Well, I'm Harrison and I started getting into music about 10 years ago when I was 6. My dad gave me a Beatles CD and it was all over. I started playing drums whenever I was about 7 and then that led to cello when I was in elementary school/middle school. Then whenever I was in about 6th grade something made me want to start playing guitar. So, my dad is a musician and had a guitar lying around the house so I tried doing that. At that point I had been dabbling with piano for awhile but never got fully into it. Then, at the end of 9th grade I was asked to play bass for my friends band Transition which I learned bass in about a week and started playing in Transition. Then, after two years of being in Transition and lots of touring we decided to call it quits. At that point I wanted to explore new instruments and decided I would start playing piano seriously. So I have been playing piano for a little under a year now. Probably about 8 months. And that's the brief history! Ha-ha Tanya: How did the band you are in now, The morning light come together and when? Harrison : Well The Morning Light came together whenever I was in Transition about a year ago and started to get really really displeased with the whole kind of music scene I suppose. I just didnt like the fact of people being like "well you're music isn't catchy enough" or "your music isn't fast enough" I don’t know. It wore on me a lot I guess so I started hanging out with one of my good friends from home Bobby and we started recording songs together when I'd be home from tour at my friend pat's studio. Then eventually Transition broke up at the end of last summer and me and matt had always got along so well and he is such a great guy/guitarist that it only made sense to ask him to come play with us. Then everything else just kind of happened from there. We are very blessed to have the amount of support we have had so far. Tanya: What talent do you bring to the band? Harrison : ha-ha well, live, I play piano and sing every now and then. On the recordings we've done thus far I have also played drums and bass. I write too. Tanya: What was your inspiration when writing the song "clouds"? Harrison : Ha-ha well. It was the middle of fall, and I had just got my wisdom teeth out. I don’t know if you've ever been around Pittsburgh in the fall time but it rains. A lot. And I'm the kind of person that rain really ruins my day. So I had just got my wisdom teeth out and they ended up taking three weeks to heal because of a whole slew of medicine/health problems and it was just a really tough 3 weeks. I had a lot of problems with my then girlfriend at the time as well. Tanya: How long does it usually take you to complete a song? Harrison : I mean, it differs so much. There is a new acoustic-esque song on our EP that's coming out in June that I wrote and finished in about an hour, but there are also songs I am working on right now that I started writing months ago. It all depends usually. I don't really like to force writing; I wait until a moment hits that really kind of puts the words down for me. Some weeks I'll finish 3 or 4 songs, sometimes none. It all depends. Tanya: What has been your favorite song you've written so far? Harrison : Man that's really tough. There are a lot of new songs that will be on our full length probably that will come out next year that I'm liking but I never really love anything I write. To be honest I really don’t think the songs I write are anything great, although every now and then I'll be a little proud of one. It’s really really hard to pick! Tanya: So you said your EP is coming out in June, Why don’t you tell us a little about that and what we can expect from it? Harrison : It's going to have 6 songs on it. It is very diverse, I think at least, for an EP. Or I'd like to think ha-ha. There are probably 2 or 3 songs that are very high energy, and there are a couple that are slower but there isn't really a ballad on it. It's very hard for me to explain ha-ha. It will give you a taste of what's to come I would say, however the full length is going to blow the EP out of the water. We are still very very proud of the EP though. We’ll probably be releasing a new song off of it within the next month or so. Tanya: You’re still in high school how do you handle making time for the band to work and to find time for friends? Harrison: I don't have time for a job haha.To be honest, juggling figuring out stuff for the band, touring, school, and trying to make time for my friends at home when we are home is not an easy task! Ha-ha. Tanya: How would you say the music scene is in PA? Harrison : Well in Pittsburgh , it's not so good. I mean there are a few local bands that are still doing their thing and trucking on great, but there aren't really as many venues as there used to be. Plus some venues really screw you over sometimes. The scene in Philly is wonderful but that is 6 hours away from us ha-ha. Tanya: You guys seem to already have a pretty big fan base, how do you keep up with it all? How much of an impact do you think sites such as my space has had on it? Harrison : Ha-ha well we still have A LOT of work/touring to do but like I said we have been very very blessed with the amount of support we have gotten from fans and stuff. I love talking to people on AIM and via my space and just meeting people. The biggest compliment I could ever get is something like "Your music helps me through my day" or something like that. It just really makes a positive impact on me when someone says that. And we owe so so much to my space ha-ha it's actually ridiculous how much the internet can help such a small band such as us. I am so thankful for it. Tanya: What is the first thing that crosses your mind when walking on stage? Harrison : Usually something along the lines of, "Did I leave my cell phone in a safe place?" or "I hope I don't completely mess up tonight." ha-ha as generic as that one is. Harrison : At hometown shows the crowds have been amazing so usually for those I am just basically shaking with excitement. Tanya: How does someone in the crowd stand out to you? Harrison : Well if someone is singing along, or dancing, or singing along AND dancing, or just really listening to the music. I mean like really LISTENING. You know what I mean? You can tell when someone is really listening to a song. Also sometimes I meet people before we play and usually I look for them first ha-ha. Tanya: What would be your dream venue to sell out? Harrison : well, one of my favorite venues I've ever played was this place called park west I think in Chicago , that place is sick! I really really like this place called alley Katz in Richmond I would love to be able to sell that place out just because it is smaller but still a great venue. Tanya: What do you think separates your band from every other new band trying to make it in the music business? Harrison : Well, I'd like to think that we have a separate goal from a lot of bands. We are all about making really really heartfelt music. We don't TRY and make our songs extra catchy you know? I don’t know. Also I think a lot of bands (not trying to sound like a jerk) but are really really obsessed with their image and making themselves LOOK good instead of sounding good. I don’t know. I don't get that whole thing. I'm probably completely wrong though! Tanya: Black and White or Colored photos? Harrison : black and white! Tanya: Blondes or Brunettes? Harrison : ha-ha red heads. Just kidding I don't really have a preference. Just any girl that is nice really. Tanya: Late nights or Early Mornings? Harrison : Late nights most definitely. Tanya: Famous or Almost Famous? Harrison : but I mean I'd be lying if I said I didn't want success because deep down everyone wants that! Tanya: Tackle or Touch? Harrison : tackle! Def. Tanya: Haunted house or Fun House? Harrison : haunted house Tanya: Pepsi or coke? Harrison : grape juice owns all. Tanya: Boston or New York ? Harrison : New York , but I'm not a city person. Tanya: Aladdin or the Lion King? Harrison : lion king! Tanya: telecaster 72 deluxe, or Gibson sg? Harrison : 110% telecaster. Tanya: Orange or Marshall? Harrison : DEFINITLEY orange Tanya: Love letters or Love songs? Harrison : They are definitely equal. Tanya: Sun or Moon? Harrison : sun Tanya: Holding hands or Kissing? Harrison : ha-ha oh man. Seriously both are great. Probably kissing though! hahaha Tanya: Talking or laughing? Harrison : Talking about stuff that makes you laugh. Tanya: Older or younger? Harrison : Younger but not younger than me. Older than me but stay young. Tanya: losing track of the time or always being on time? Harrison : I'm always late, so losing track of the time as long as you're loosing track doing something fun. Tanya: High Fives or Winks? Harrison : ha-ha high fives but winks are nice too! But only for girls. Ha-ha Tanya: shoes or no shoes? Harrison : sandals def. Tanya: popsicles or ice cream Harrison : ice cream :-)
