The Maine

MYSPACE

Tanya: Tell me a little about you and the band and how it got started?
John: Well Patrick, Garrett, and Ryan have been in two bands before this (The Kerosene Kids & the Seasons Company). Patrick's brother Tim is one of my best friends (he is also our manager), so long story short...their old singer quit and I told Tim I wanted to try out. I tried out for Pat and then that was it. As far as Alex our piano player, we were at practice and knew that we needed something else so we called him and it all worked out. We've only been a real band for about 2 months, and we've only played one show.

Tanya: How long have you been involved with music? Is it something you've always wanted to do?
John: Well I haven't really been "involved" with music for too long. Some of my best friends were in a band for a while, and I knew I wanted to do it, but never had the courage too. So when the opportunity arose, I built up enough inside and took the chance. I mean music is really my life, I know its clich, but it really is.

Tanya: where did the band name The Maine" comes from?
John: Umm well, we were kind of crunched for time as far as the band name went, and I was on a road trip with some friends. We passed a street called "Maine Ave." and it was just something about it that stood out to me. I threw a "the" and dropped the "ave." and told the dudes. They were all down, and that was it. I wish I had some cooler story.

Tanya: If you could add another member, dead or alive, to the band that would you pick?
John: ummm I'd probably go with a buddy of mine named Eric Halvorsen, he used to play in some bands...we just know each other really well musically, I don't know what he would play haha, but that's the first person I thought of. You were probably expecting some really famous people huh?
Pat K: hmm that's a hard one, I would have to say Justin Richards from the band Brighten because he is such an amazing songwriter and a really good friend of ours.

Tanya: Who would you say has been your biggest musical influence?
John: Well Tim Kirch has a lot to do with why I'm in the band...but musically I would say Death Cab for Cutie, Roger Clyne, Wallflowers, 90's Alternative Rock, and my dad is a music freak so he got me into music. I guess it's just music in general that influences me.
Pat K: as far as a band id say new found glory because there the first band I really got into, and all my brothers' friends who played in bands that's what really got me wanting to play music

Tanya: Do you have any touring plans for 2007?
John: For sure...we are getting ready to record our EP that will hopefully be out by the end of March, then after that everything is up in the air as far as touring goes for summer of 07'. But we will for sure be touring, we are just not sure with who and where just yet.

Tanya: Ideally if you were headlining your first tour what bands would you want as the openers?
John: Well we are really good friends with Brighten, and I'm sure the guys would agree with me that touring with them would be rad.
Pat K: hmm imp going to have to say Third eye Blind, Cartel, and Brighten

Tanya: What would make someone in the crowd stand out to you?
John: umm well I have only played one show, but it was really crazy to see someone you've never met before singing your words.

Tanya: What is your dream venue to play in?
John: Umm I watched a video of Freddie Mercury and Queen Play at Live Aid in Philadelphia in front of a ridiculous amount of people, so I would say that?
Pat K: I've always wanted to play at the Norva in Virginia

Tanya: Sex, drugs or rock n roll?
John: Rock N Roll straight up.
Pat K: I don't Drink or do drugs so I would have to say rock n roll!

Tanya: Has Myspace had a big impact on your fan base?
John: No doubt about it, it helps so much with networking and spreading the word.

Tanya: What's your Take on the bands out there who say things like This fucking meet and greet is lame, when is it over and complain about spending time with the fans, how much do your fans mean to you?
John: Haha well saying something like that is ridiculous. I have been and still am a fan of bands and music in general, and if someone said that to me I would be immediately turned off and lose a lot of respect, I think being humble and modest is the biggest thing about being in a band. People who make music have to realize that the music they make might be for them, but others relate to it and appreciate it. Fans mean the world to every band, and if anyone says otherwise they're lying.

Tanya: Pat, You are the drummer correct?
Pat K: yes
Tanya: That's awesome, what was the first song you learned how to play?
Pat K: "that thing you do." from the movie haha

Tanya: Who is your favorite drummer?
Pat K: hmm I've never really had a favorite drummer but I think that Chris the drummer of the Rx bandits is amazing!

Tanya: What was the first concert you ever went to?
Pat K: Third eye blind
Tanya: no way me too
Pat K: haha that's funny!
John: I saw Home Grown and Millencolin when I was in seventh grade at a place called The Nile.

Tanya: what's one song another band has written that you wish yours had?
Pat K: "a safe bet" by a band called The Morning Light.
John: Umm, if I had to pick one song it would have to be either Hotel California by The Eagles or Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie.

Tanya: How has your family supported your music?
Pat K: they support it a lot whenever we need anything they are always willing to help!
John: It kind of caught them off guard, I mean they bought me a guitar when I was way young but they really never pressured me to do anything with it. Then when I showed them our songs, they were extremely soaked and called all of their friends. haha

Tanya: What's your biggest fear?
Pat K: not being able to play music anymore
John: I'm really afraid of not being happy.

Tanya: What is the first thing that crosses your mind when you walk on stage?
Pat K: I'm just very excited before we play!
John: Well, I've only done it twicebut I have prayed right when I am on stage and that's just about the first thing that comes to mind.

Tanya: Do you find it hard to juggle both the band and school?
Pat K: at times its hard but its all worth it.
John: Oh man, I had no idea how hard that would actually be. I am struggling to do extra well this semester.

Tanya: Where do you see the band in 5 or 10 years?
Pat K: Hopefully touring full time and putting out records! Playing to tons of awesome kids!
John: I see us still being good friends no matter what happens.

Tanya: what is one thing you wish you could change about the music industry?
Pat K: umm just make it easier for smaller bands to get noticed!
John: I wish everyone got a fair chance to make it.

Tanya: if you could describe yourself in five words what would they be?
Pat K: that's hard! haha strange, creepy, awkward, kind, passionate.
John: Honest, compassionate, outgoing, humble, trustworthy.

Tanya: If I was in a CD store and I had yours in one hand and another bands in the other what would you tell me to convince me to buy it?
Pat K: I would say that I know you would really enjoy our CD because its fun and you can clap and sing along!
John: I would buy ours for you so you could still get the one you wanted. haha

Tanya: after everything is all said and done what do you want your band to be remembered for?
Pat K: hopefully that we wrote songs that people really got a lot out of more than just listening to a song but it made them feel a certain way.
John: I want the band to be remembered for being the most down-to-earth, easy to talk to, just overall good people.
