DJ Rossstar MYSPACE | Buzznet Jamie: For those who don't know, tell us who you are and what you do. DJ Rossstar: My name is DJ Rossstar. I run an online radio show called DJ Rossstar's Punk Rock Show every Wednesday and Thursday night from 7-8pm PST on Idobi Radio. I also write music blogs and conduct interviews for buzznet.com and host Havoc on the 101 on Direct TV Channel 101 every Monday night at 11ppm PST. Jamie: Wow! You do a lot! How did you get started? DJ Rossstar: I started out on my college radio station at American University in Washington D.C. Growing up in the mid-nineties, there wasn't many places to go to find out about pop-punk and punk bands. I searched far and wide for a radio or TV show that dealt with that music but no one had created one ...so I made my own. Jamie: Was it hard starting your own? DJ Rossstar: Surprisingly, no. From the very beginning, labels were thrilled that there was finally a place their artists could go to get some exposure beyond the Internet. Jamie: Thats awesome! How many artists would you say you've interviewed? DJ Rossstar: Well over 200. Many of today's mainstream artists did their first interviews on my show before they were famous ... or even signed to major labels. (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Paramore to name a few) Jamie: Do you ever get star struck? DJ Rossstar: Honestly, I never have. I think that is why bands feel comfortable doing interviews out of my bedroom apartment. Jamie: Oh wow! You do the interviews in your apartment? DJ Rossstar: Yep! In Los Angeles, Califorina. The station is set up right in my bedroom. It's great seeing the reactions of some of my guests at first glance. Jamie: That's hilarious! What is one artist/band that you would love to interview but haven't gotten a chance to yet? DJ Rossstar: Green Day. I have been a dedicated fan for 14 years. They are my main source of inspiration. Jamie: Oh good choice. So how do you feel buzznet.com has affected your radio show? DJ Rossstar: Buzznet has given me some great exposure through their site. They have been filming some of my radio shows and featuring them exclusively on the page, so I get some worldwide exposure weekly. Jamie: Thats so great. I have noticed that you often do "top ten" lists of musicians (example "top ten artists with beards"), where did you come up with that idea and what was the funniest list you made? DJ Rossstar: I haven't done that in some time but I have so much fun with it when I do. My favorite ones are the ones revolving around '80s TV shows. Jamie: Nice. Do you play an instrument yourself? DJ Rossstar: I can play some of my favorite pop-punk tunes on acoustic guitar but I leave that for the professionals. I just do the talking! Jamie: What's the funniest thing that's ever happened during your show? DJ Rossstar: I have had so many great and funny moments. Quite often we will leave the mic on during a break and kids will hear us talking sh-- Jamie: Have you ever had any awkward moments during your show? DJ Rossstar: Tons. Sometimes I won't get the jokes ... most of the time, the band doesn't! Jamie: What's one random thing your fans don't know about you? DJ Rossstar: Probably that I only own about 4 pairs of jeans :) It's quite sad. I am still waiting for Plain White T's or The Higher to buy me a pair! Jamie: Have any bands ever bought you anything? If so, what was the best gift? DJ Rossstar: Sadly, I can't recall ANY gifts from ANY bands. I guess they bring me the gift of an audience two days a week which is now 20,000 on average ! Jamie: So, the famous question - sex, drugs or rock and roll? DJ Rossstar: Well ... I have never even tried a cigarette, so no drugs for me Jamie: so sex or rock and roll? DJ Rossstar: Umm... Both. Sex, while listening to rock n roll. How is that? Jamie: Any last words? DJ Rossstar: Thanks for doing this and thanks to everyone for listening all these years. I love being able to connect you with your favorite bands. |
