Bank MYSPACE Tanya: Tell me a little about you and the band and how it all got started. Dan Keck: we are a four-piece indie pop band from Boise, Idaho. Home of the potatoes. I started the band three years ago in February with my brother Andrew, we were kind of a screamo band at the time all we were missing was the black eyeliner it wasn't exactly us Andrew can scream with the best of them though if you ask him nicely... we went through a lineup change last summer and decided to have more fun with our music. We are sons of a venue owner here in town and we have seen tons of shows. I was really taken by bands like the format and hellogoodbye, so we adjusted our sound to be more fun Tanya: I just saw hellogoodbye Friday! Dan Keck: awesome! I am going to see them on the 19th! Tanya: yeah they were amazing Dan Keck: soooooo much fun! That is exactly what I am talking about Tanya: How would you describe your music to new listeners? Dan Keck: I would say we are in the same vein as bands like death cab although we are much more light-hearted. I don't know if you can use the emo stereotype but some people like to throw that in. we definitely have a strong songwriting element. I would like to say the songs would be good on an acoustic guitar without any other instrumentation we are moving ever closer to pop music but don't tell anyone. There are so many bands that just play pop music but they just cover it up by whatever scene they are part of. Tanya: Who in the band writes the lyrics? Dan Keck: I do. Tanya: What was your inspiration for writing beautiful Dan Keck: the first line "asphalt is a funny word, when you say it in your mind" was written on our first tour last spring. I was thinking about my ex-girlfriend and how she was moving away he whole thing came together and the picture of me going to Seattle to live in the rain while she moved to the sunshine state was perfect for how I felt there is a ton of symbolism in the lyrics. Like when I talk about her marrying a boy from the Bible belt. I was talking about her becoming religious. I think that is what she wanted me to be... some kind of perfect Christian boy. I don't know if you noticed the lyrics after the first verse talking about her finding a boy that makes her feel secure. When I talk about finding the girl I am going to marry I talk about a girl that makes me feel alive. I think those are basic differences in guys and girls. The rest of the song is fantasy. But it is a beautiful picture of marriage to me. The chorus is a double perspective. I am singing about what I am seeing and my brother is singing what I am feeling inside it was an interesting way to write all of that. The chorus I mean Tanya: wow that?s intense Tanya: Are you guys planning on touring anytime soon? Dan Keck: yeah we want to get out on the road ASAP winter becomes hard here. We are in a bad place to start from. salt lake city is 6 hrs away and there is treacherous winter roads there Portland is 8 hrs and there is one mountain pass Seattle is 8 hours with two passes snow becomes a problem so hopefully by early spring we will get out. If we got picked up on a tour we would drop everything and go. Snow or no snow! Tanya: ha-ha sweet, o you guys have your own van Dan Keck: yep. Tanya: does it have a name?! Dan Keck: we financed a nice one this year Tanya: every van needs a name;-) Dan Keck: we tried to get her one. She is very polite green, very big any ideas? Tanya: green bean, ha-ha I don?t know? give me some time and im sure ill come up with a good one... the green monster Dan Keck: ok. I will expect it. No no, not a monster Tanya: hahaa, monsters can be nice Dan Keck: yeah I guess you are right Tanya: don?t you worry ill get you a good one Dan Keck: ok thanks Tanya: what one song another artist or band has written that you wish you had Dan Keck: that is a great question. Is it ok if it is totally obscure? Tanya: yes Dan Keck: ok. There is a song by a good friend of mine named brain Wilkinson he wrote this song called "in my imagination" and it totally blows me away. I listened to it and I just wanted to write more and better music because I was like "damn, that song could be on the radio" Tanya: I?ll have to listen to it sometime Dan Keck: he actually helped produce the song heartbreak on our profile, he was the reason we recorded that song Tanya: If you could be on tour with any band who would it be Dan Keck: I would love to tour with Copeland Tanya: ohhh I love them Dan Keck: have you heard their new album? Tanya: I've heard a few songs I think im so bad with names of songs and if they are new or not Dan Keck: that is ok their new album is very introspective and dark but absolutely fantastic. I would also love to tour with a band like hellogoodbye, it seems like it would be a party all the time! Tanya: I would love to see that tour Dan Keck: coming to your town in '07 haha! Tanya: ill be waiting Dan Keck: I think that I basically want to tour with the bands that I look up to bands that have in my eyes "made it" Tanya: yeah that would be the most fun and have more than one dream coming true at once cant get much better Dan Keck: but I am sure it wouldn't live up to my naive expectations. The thing about touring is you are automatically peers with whoever you are on the road with; you spend so much time just doing stupid stuff like playing catch or Xbox that you end up being great friends. Tanya: What has been your favorite venue to play in so far? Dan Keck: we played warped tour this year on the Ernie ball stage that wasn't my favorite though... Tanya: ahh that?s awesome though Dan Keck: every time we go to Seattle we have an awesome show it doesn't matter what venue although if I had to say which one I would have to say the "old Redmond firehouse" outside of Seattle it is a teen center but bands play there all the time. Tanya: do you have a dream venue you want to play in? Dan Keck: I would love to play in Texas stadium. Where the cowboys play haha Tanya: there ya go Dan Keck: I was born in Texas and my mom said she had to drive by there to deliver me haha Tanya: have you guys had any crazy fan experiences yet? Dan Keck: outside of girls wanting to get crazy? jk not really. We are pretty down to earth and we talk to anyone that wants to listen. I think that people would be having the crazy "band experience" when they are around us Tanya: How do you remember your fans; which ones stick out in your head? Dan Keck: the ones that come and talk to us. That always helps. I love it when show goers come to see us more than once. It feels like we are actually connected although I will admit a red dress helps haha Tanya: alright want to play this or that?! this or that it?s a fun little game Dan Keck: ok let?s do it Tanya: hahaha lets Dan Keck: what are the rules? Tanya: there are no rules Dan Keck: intrigued Tanya: blondes or brunettes Dan Keck: blondes Tanya: late nights or early mornings Dan Keck: late nights Dan Keck: of course Tanya: well duhhh, coke or Pepsi Dan Keck: Pepsi Tanya: plane or freezer Dan Keck: plane Tanya: here or there Dan Keck: there, definitely there Tanya: relationship or being single Dan Keck: relationship Tanya: brokenheart or heartbreaker Dan Keck: brokenheart Tanya: holding hands or kissing Dan Keck: holding hands. geez we just met! Tanya: hahahahaha my bad Tanya: sun or rain Dan Keck: sun Tanya: famous or almost famous Dan Keck: almost famous unless that means I don't make any money haha Tanya: hah right, haunted house or fun house Dan Keck: I hate both of them! Tanya: well damn, give me some words to live by Dan Keck: follow your heart. It knows best. Tanya: If you could have dinner with any five people dead or alive who would it be Dan Keck: the obvious three, Jesus, ghandi and bono...the not so obvious... my gradpa on my mom's side (he died when i was just getting to know him) and a lost friend who will remain nameless. Tanya: aww nice dinner Dan Keck: I think so. Or awkward I hope there is a translator there. My grandpa didn't have very many teeth! Tanya: When everything is all said and done what do you want your band to be remembered for Dan Keck: honesty and integrity in a business where that is no longer a normal trait. Tanya: if you could change one thing about the music industry what would it be Dan Keck: the thing is the system is so set it starts at the top with the corporate monkeys that don't really care about music at all. just the bottom line it ends up that bands are whored out like prostitutes only because they love what they are doing there is no stopping it either. At least in a capitalist society. Bands still want to be signed by the all powerful record labels no matter what. Talk about selling your soul to Satan. Tanya: the sad thing is its so true Dan Keck: if I could change that reality I would I don't know if that is "one thing" or not. |
