AJ Edwards Myspace Jamie.: Tell us who you are and what you do. AJ: Well, the short answer is that my name is AJ Edwards; I write, perform, and record music to keep myself going. I could tell you a bit more, but that's the short version; there isn't much more than music. Jamie.: You say you write music, what is your favorite song that you've written and why? AJ: Probably "I'm Open." It conveys a theme that I had been trying to put to music for awhile... I think people can connect with the song on a number of levels, too. And while I'm writing music for myself, I feel as though I've created something great when a listener can relate to a thought or idea I have. Jamie.: Very cool. Alright, what was the first concert you ever attended and how old were you? AJ: I'd gone to concerts... but I would say the "first" concert I went to was U2 at the [then] FleetCenter in Boston. I grew up listening to U2 albums that belonged to my Dad.. and then, when I was 16 my Dad got a pair of tickets to the show. That show was a turning point in my life cause I realized then that I wanted to play music more than anything else. Jamie.: I'm super jealous. U2 is great. I take it U2 is one of your influences, who else would you say has influenced you Musically? AJ: Jeff Buckley... musically, and as a lyricist, too. He's just an amazing musician. Then of course, The Beatles, Ryan Adams, Radiohead, John Mayer, Damien Rice... to name a few. Jamie.:Alright. If you could tour with ANY musician (dead or alive) who would it be and why? AJ: Jeff Buckley, without a second-thought... because you know he truly took all of his songs to church when he played them live. The rollercoaster of seeing him do that every night and just hanging out with him between shows would just be surreal. Jamie.: You've been playing around New England for a while now, have you had any creepy fan experiences? AJ: Haha! Not just yet. Jamie.: Ok so you have no creepy fans, have you had any fans do nice things for you? AJ: Oh absolutely... I've had some incredible support from the students at Merrimack College - the school I graduated from. A special thanks to them. And of course people are helping considerably even just by spreading the word to others, and sharing my music with new listeners. Word of mouth is huge! My friends and family make it a point to come out to the shows, too, which is so awesome and just makes for a fun evening. Jamie.: Have you ever had an embarrassing moment while on stage? AJ: One time I was doing a benefit show in front of the largest audience I'd ever played to and two or three songs into my set I just couldn't keep the low "E" string in tune. I had that "show must go on" mentality and tried playing a song that was written in the key of E... it was a crash and burn, obviously - but I guess it worked out... I just pictured everyone in their underwear. Jamie.: Haha. Did that age old trick actually work for ya? AJ: It really is a good one! Jamie.: Good to know. So the internet is huge these days (crazy I know), how do you feel web sites like myspace and facebook have affected your career? AJ: Those two sites have been amazing... they provide phenomenal networking and have only sharpened my awareness to some truly great talent that is so close by. Both great resources. Jamie.: The music industry is going in a strange direction with record labels succumbing to online music stores. How do you feel about the industries somewhat upsetting future? AJ: Well, with the internet being so huge these days I think online music stores are only appropriate. We live in a progressive world and this is one of the many changes that will occur that people will accept just as soon as they can rationalize it. Jamie.: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? AJ: Ideally, finishing up a tour and returning home. In 5-10 years I see myself flat on my back thinking, "I got this far... what's next?" Jamie.: Any words of advice for aspiring musicians? AJ: I think John Mayer put it best in the credits of one of his albums... are you familiar with the quote? Jamie.: I am remembering something...but my John Mayer fandome is escaping me. AJ: i'd like to do it complete justice, but it went something like... to whomever is reading this with an instrument on your lap, we need to hear from you. and, as a constantly-aspiring musician, that stuck with me. It WAS his most recent album! I was just starting to think my memory was improving. Silly AJ. direct quote, btw: "If you're reading this with an instrument in your lap - get to work, and deep in it. We all need you." Jamie.: Cds or Records AJ: Records! Delicious records! Jamie.: Starbucks or Dunks AJ: Starbucks Jamie.: Boston or New York AJ: Boston Jamie.: In your opinion what is the greatest song ever written? AJ: It's evident by now that I'm very much on Jeff Buckley's side... but his song, "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is a violently perfect song. Jamie.: Oh you and your Jeff Buckley love. So you've been in the studio recently. When will you be releasing another album? AJ: I'm so glad you asked about that, actually... I am extremely excited for the release of our first full-length, full-band record. I have so much faith in the project and we're shooting for a Spring 2008 release. Jamie.: Any ideas for a CD title? AJ: Hmm... "Starbucks" or "Dunks? So. Do you have any last words? AJ: I'm at a bit of a loss for "last words..." I was just beginning to have fun. But thanks so much for your time and thanks, everyone, who has and continues to support me. See you at the show! |
