Artist: Sparks the Rescue
Release: "The Secrets We Can't Keep" EP

Sparks the Rescue is probably the best band you haven't heard yet. Maine's best export, (narrowly beating out lobster tails), has toured New England relentlessly the past couple years, and they deserve all of the buzz this exposure has been generating. Their EP, "The Secrets We Can't Keep," is available for download through all the usual suspect online retailers: I-Tunes, Downloadpunk, Smartpunk, et cetera. On it are six of the best screamo-rock-melodycore songs this side of Y2K. Never coming close to realizing the cliché "too many cooks in the kitchen," the six members of Sparks effortlessly mix synth, screams, catchy-as-hell choruses, and rock n' roll plausibility on their debut. The screams are intelligible rather than solfege-style growling; the choruses as mentioned inspire random acts of humming; the music is up-tempo and driving, but makes requisite pit stops for necessary breakdowns. "Nurse Nurse" surges ahead, dancing a little heavier upon trails blazed by bands like Hawthorne Heights. "Getting Clean in the Dirty South" peppers the listener with sing-along lines and a fierce wit: "…'cause her lipstick looks so good / across my waist." "Soco Boys Have No Class" shows a softer side of Sparks, utilizing no screams. This underscores their competency as song-makers, demonstrating that different vocal styles are tools rather than gimmicks for the best non-lobster thing out of Maine
