The HivesBand: The Hives. CD: The Black And White Album Released/Label: 2007, Intersope Records Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. When you think of Sweden, artists like ABBA, or if you’re more of an indie music junkie, Peter Bjorn and John may come to mind. Well you wont be thinking that if you’ve ever given Fagersta natives, The Hives, a listen. 2007 has been a good year for Howlin’ Pelle, Nicholaus Arson, Vigilante, Dr. Matt Destruction, and Chris Dangerous. Not only is their new single “Tick Tick Boom” being played on radio stations world wide, but it’s featured in array of video games, they have a few commercials out, some of their tracks on The Black and White Album were produced by The Neptunes, and they also collaborated with Timbaland on “Throw It On Me” off of the album, Timbaland Presents : Shock Value. The Black And White Album picks right up where Tyrannosauraus Hives left off, but with a twist. “Tick Tick Boom” sticks to classic Hives sound. That sound would be the catchy-stuck in your head- garage band rock that we all know and love. Somewhere between “Try It Again” and “Well Alright!” we hear Veni Vidi Vicious like songs mixed in with a sort of Hive-Elution, if you will. By the time you get to “A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors”, you’ll hear a notable change. Using only a drum machine and a 1960’s organ, this instrumental 2 minute and 37 second track switched you from garage band rock to a “Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band”-esc sound that suits our five favorite Swedish boys well. Then once it hits “You Dress Up For Armageddon”, its right back to the classic Hives sound. The Black And White Album is a rollercoaster of garage band rock and post punk revival. They stick to their roots and throw a suprising wrench in the works, but pull it off well.
