Dusk and Summer-Dashboard Confessional6/27/06- Vagrant Records Brooding, emotional, meaningful all illustrative words to describe Dashboard Confessionals early work that never ceased to let down their fans. From the 2001 release The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most to 2005s A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar, the alternative songs allowed its fans to not only rock out to Chris Carrabbas comforting voice but also to relate to typical situations like broken hearts and disappointments. Their recurring success prompted Carrabba, the man behind the bands vigor, to release an immediate album. There were high hopes for the upcoming music, and after two long years of hiatus, fans expected an urgent issue. So came Dusk and Summer, Dashboards fourth full-length CD. The album brings almost a new way to classify the band; it undeniably diverges from the melodic guitar strumming and broken-hearted complaining. While the music still focuses on relationships, the overall feeling of the album shows Carrabbas maturity and happiness. Instant success was brought to the band, which guaranteed them a set on the same stage as pop-idols Hilary Duff and JoJo at Bostons Kiss 108 Concert 2007. Radio success flooded the charts, and within six months, Dashboard Confessional was considered mainstream. Many fans have been lost due to the strong change represented by this album, but for every one that ditched the band, ten more were gained. The albums opener features a four-minute track entitled Dont Wait that lures its listeners in and makes them want more just like it. The songs highlights include powerful vocals, meaningful lyrics, and eloquent instrumentals. The drawn out words, such as the ambient Oooooh throughout the song, is mixed with an effective combination of drum and guitar to define the bands talent. Stolen is the fourth track of the album, the best one of the best ones, and the song that has caught the attention of thousands of thirteen-year old teenyboppers. The album version slightly differs from the radio version, but, regardless, its soft melody and calming vocals make it easy for anybody to enjoy. Adam Duritz, lead singer of the Counting Crows, is featured on So Long, So Long. The duo creates an invigorating sound for Dusk and Summer, twisting soothing vocals with a soft beat of piano and drum. It didnt take much to win the new fan-base over after they heard this song. The remaining songs have been the most disappointing to all of Dashboard Confessionals original fans. They are satisfactory and Dashboard has always been that band that you could count on to be more than just okay. Chris Carrabba himself mentioned in an interview that he was regretful for the release, and he honestly wished that he had waited before emitting it. And thats exactly how many of his year long fans are feeling as a result of the new CD. The album still touches emotional topics and overwhelms its listeners with the immense talent of the band, but the overall tone of it is more positive than previous releases. The music shows a different side of the band, steering away from the bleeding heart emotion and driving toward a newfound optimism. No matter what kind of mood you are in or what kind of music you like, there is sure to be a song on Dusk and Summer to satisfy you. The album can be purchased on iTunes for $7.99.
